FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
How do I choose which type of Yoga to try?
The yoga classes that I offer are suitable for all ages and all levels of experience. There are two different types of classes I offer: Dynamic Yoga and Modified Ashtanga Yoga. Complete beginners are welcome to either class. It is a good idea to try both styles to find the one that suits you, and some students choose to attend both classes each week. If you currently have an injury and have never done yoga before it may be a good idea to start with the Restorative Yoga class. For help and advice choosing which class to attend you can contact me to have a chat on 07903 663 163.
What if I just can’t do a pose?
How many times have I heard, "I can't do yoga because I can't touch my toes"? Well that's the whole point. Yoga classes are there for you to remobilise the body, learn to breath properly and clear away stress. Many people leave their first yoga class feeling like they were unable to do half the poses, but they all leave with a feeling of strange calm and happiness. Being able to nail the poses isn't the reason behind doing yoga, and by your fourth yoga class you'll certainly feel in the swing of things.
During the class I offer plenty of variations (modifications of each pose) and you can choose the one that feels good for you. Never forget, you can also opt to rest, or do another pose that you would like to work on. Above all remember that this is Your Practice - Always honour your body and do only what is comfortable.
I’m suffering from injuries. Can Yoga help me recover?
Absolutely, the restorative yoga class I offer are perfect for working therapeutically with your injury and also strengthen your core and back. It's really important that you communicate any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries to me before class. That way I can make sure the poses accommodate your needs and can help you recover.
I want to lose weight. Can Yoga help me do this and which classes are best for weight loss?
The answer is yes! My Modified Ashtanga Yoga classes can help you lose weight. The class sequence includes Sun Salutations, deep lunges and abdominal work, all combined with correct breathing. The result: You'll increase your metabolism, burn calories and create long lean muscles. Practicing Yoga can also make you more mindful of when and what you are eating and how you take care of your body. And don't forget you'll get great posture which makes you look longer and leaner.
I've been recommended Yoga classes to help me manage stress. But which class should I do and does Yoga really help?
Yoga is a complete mind-body practice that promotes physical and mental calm in a non-competitive environment. Both of my classes will provide excellent stress-relief and teach you tools for cultivating greater peace and happiness, but I especially recommend the Restorative Yoga classes for immediate help with managing stress.
I’ve never done Yoga before, what should I wear? Do I need a mat?
We always recommend loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing any accessories, jewelry or perfume. Yoga is practiced with bare feet so you will be asked to take your shoes and socks off. At the Surbiton yoga studio I provide all the equipment you will need, although you are more than welcome to bring along your own. At the Norbiton Yoga Studio you will need to bring along your own yoga mat. It is also a good idea to bring along an extra top/shawl for the final relaxation. Please turn off your mobile phone before class.
Do I need to book/make a reservation for class, or can I just show up?
The classes I run are all drop-in style with no need to book and no term dates. It is a good idea to contact me before your first class to let me know you will be attending. You should also arrive 10 mins early to your first class in order to fill in any forms and say hello. After that you are welcome to drop-in as you please, although getting into a routine of attending class each week is vital in order to see results.
How often should I do yoga?
Now that’s the magic question! I’d obviously say the more the better, but you’ve got to fit in your life as well. Traditionally yoga is done six days a week with Saturdays off, although it would take quite a while to build up that commitment. Start by scheduling in one or two classes per week that you can attend regularly. What you need to build up is the habit of doing yoga on a regular basis. Around five weeks into a solid routine you’ll begin to notice your practice develop much more quickly.
